Wow, amazing site layout! Look forward to treading through your archives. As a fellow traveler I'll look for tips. As a fellow writer, I'll try to steal some tactics.

Hello Don,
Thank you so much for mentioning the Rowell Retrospective on your blog. By coincidence, Sierra Club Books released the paperback edition (at $39.95) in Nov of last year. I'll pass your story on to the folks at SCB. I know they'll be thrilled. As you can imagine, this has been a moving project for all of us.

Don, let me know your address, and I'll ask that a review copy be sent to you (and I'd love to add you back to my mailing list for any future adventure and travel books.

Happy New Year! My best, Sam

Do you know the name of those red bean sweets, one gastronomic discovery on a trip to Japan, years ago? I was trying to describe them to the staff in a Japanese restaurant a fortnight ago and got only blank looks.

Hi Don,

I've been keeping up with you on various sites and in May/June NatGeo Traveler magazine where you wrote about niche guidebooks (those City Walks guides are great.) I enjoy reading your work.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my guides that are out now and available for the BlackBerry cell phone. They are written in a travel quiz format and are designed to help travelers better understand the PEOPLE and cultural norms of their destinations. Additionally, there are local tips and language sections. As long as the traveler has battery power in their cell phone, they can use this product anywhere in the world. Literally.

Keep up the great writing, Don. Let us know when you slum it down here in LA. Ha!

Best Regards,

Brendon S. David

Don,

A few years ago I was part of a self-guided group of ex-river rats, as well as my daughter as she transitioned between high school and moving away to college, on a 10-day trek on the main fork.

It was a great trip (except the part of emptying the "grover" at the take-out!).

I did a 10-day raft on the Main Fork (we couldn't get drawn for the Middle) with my older daughter, between her high school graduation and leaving for college.

What a great trip. Two suggestions. Bring plenty of beer (in cans) to drag behind you and watch your sleeping bag before you crawl in. One of our group found a large rattler laying on top.

Oh, and beware of the "groover!"
