I got back late Sunday from my six-daywhitewater rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. The landscape was extraordinarily wild and beautiful, the guides were skillful and knowledgeable and shared their passion and their camaraderie generously, the weather was sun-and-blue-skies perfect every day, and my travel companions were enthusiastic and congenial. In March I had the adventure of a lifetime on a cruise in Baja California Sur. The landscapes and seascapes were beautiful, but most transporting of all was a prolonged and very close encounter with a whale baby and its momma in Magdalena Bay. In my story on Don’s Place I call this an “inter-species play date.” [...]
