Tomorrow morning I leave for a six-day whitewater rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. A number of people — including the very efficient and friendly folks at OARS, who have organized the trip — have described this to me as a truly classic whitewater adventure, so I’m psyched! I stuffed long underwear, fleece tops and bottoms and a shiny new rain coat and pants into my duffle bag, and I’m ready to go. I’m bringing my still cam and video cam as well as my notebook — we’ll see what kind of shots I get. Cowabunga!

I did a 10-day raft on the Main Fork (we couldn’t get drawn for the Middle) with my older daughter, between her high school graduation and leaving for college.
What a great trip. Two suggestions. Bring plenty of beer (in cans) to drag behind you and watch your sleeping bag before you crawl in. One of our group found a large rattler laying on top.
Oh, and beware of the “groover!”
