Wide world of adventures

Tonight I had the great honor and pleasure to host an on-stage conversation with the inimitable Tim Cahill at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco — and that seems like a perfect way to begin this blog, on stage with the pre-eminent literary adventure travel writer of our time. Near the end of our conversation, I asked Tim why he continued to travel and write, what — after all these years — the juice was for him. And he talked about how he’s still so passionately curious about the world and how travel nurtures his “inner adolescent” — and too how travelers can make a difference for the planet, by helping preserve some wild place or ancient tradition that might otherwise simply become extinct. Tim is a relentlessly trenchant explorer and an extraordinarily talented writer — and a guy with a heart as big as the world he wanders. If you haven’t read his work, you’re in for a treat. And if you have, you deserve another treat.

Tim — thanks for an amazing evening, and for a poignant, perfect reminder of why we do what we do.

  1. Over the years I have read most all of Cahill’s books and many of his articles in Outside and elsewhere. Without a doubt he is my inspiration. My online nom de plume might as well be “A. Wannabe Tim Cahill.”
